Things to do near Collingwood

Revel & Hide sits between four streets that hold almost everything you'll need: Johnston to the north, Gertrude to the south, Smith to the east, Brunswick to the west. Inner-city Melbourne at its most concentrated, a few blocks that pack in more cafes, bars and studios than most entire suburbs. The MCG is a short ride or a twenty minute walk away, if a match or a concert is part of the plan.

Coffee, taken seriously

Melbourne doesn't do bad coffee, and this pocket of it does some of the city's best. Sackville Street has a couple of favourites tucked in next to the local breweries, good for a batch brew in the sun. Gertrude Street has its share of hole-in-the-wall spots too, some barely bigger than the machine itself, each with its own regulars.

Street art

Rose Street in nearby Fitzroy is thick with it, laneway after laneway of murals that change more often than most galleries. Collingwood and Fitzroy have long been the epicentre of Melbourne's street art scene, and a slow wander through the backstreets will turn up more than any guidebook could list.

Craft breweries

The inner north has become something of a brewing hub in recent years. Expect big warehouse spaces with award-winning pale ales, smaller rowdier setups squeezed into old industrial buildings, and everything served with simple, good food alongside it. Most are an easy walk from each other, so an afternoon can turn into a proper crawl if you let it.

Smith Street shopping

Smith Street is the spine of the neighbourhood, record stores, vintage clothing, homewares, and a growing list of independent makers. Collingwood Yards, just off Johnston Street, brings a cluster of artist studios together under one roof, with a rooftop bar and restaurant that's worth the visit on its own.

Wine bars, after dark

This part of Melbourne takes its wine as seriously as its coffee. Small, unpretentious bars with big lists and better food, the kind of places where the bottle takeaway discount is as good a reason to stay as the atmosphere.

Markets and studios

Weekend markets pop up regularly around Fitzroy and Collingwood, vintage clothing, handmade goods, local art. Abbotsford Convent, a short walk along the Yarra, is worth a wander any day of the week, with resident artist studios and a produce market when the timing lines up.
